How to Start Reading the Bible When You Feel Overwhelmed

If you’ve ever opened your Bible and just sat there thinking, “Where do I even start?”I get it. I’ve felt that too. Sometimes life feels heavy and the Bible feels… a little overwhelming. Like it’s too big, too deep, too much when you’re already stretched thin. You want to be in the Word, but you’re not sure how to start reading the Bible or make it a habit.

If that’s you, you’re not alone.

Opening Your Bible With Confidence

Here are a few simple, grace-filled ways to ease into reading the Bible—especially when your heart wants it but your brain feels tired.

When Reading the Bible…Start Small—Really Small

You don’t have to jump into a year-long plan or try to read five chapters a day. Just start with one verse or a short passage. That’s it. The Gospel of John or Psalms are great places to begin if you’re not sure where to open.

One verse can really be enough to ground you.

Sometimes I’ll write that one verse on a sticky note and stick it on my bathroom mirror or the kitchen counter—somewhere I know I’ll see it throughout the day. It’s a simple reminder to come back to Scripture, even if it’s just that one line. Over time, those little moments start to add up.

When Reading the Bible…Let Go of the “Rules”

Still loving my not-so-quiet quiet time mug – a Word Seekers Society gift to encourage womento keep reading the Bible.

You don’t need the perfect highlighters, an hour of silence, or a seminary degree to meet God in His Word. There’s no “right way” to read the Bible. There’s just your heart showing up—and that’s more than enough.

If you’ve been waiting for ideal conditions, consider this your permission to show up as you are, today. Even when your quiet time isn’t so quiet!

When Reading the Bible…Create a Simple Rhythm

Think small habits you already have that you can attach Bible reading to. Morning coffee. Nursing the baby. Parking lot quiet before work.

Reading one passage at the same time every day helps it become less of a task and more of a rhythm.

When Reading the Bible…Write It Down

Sometimes writing helps your heart slow down long enough to actually hear what God is saying. If you’re looking for a simple way to stay consistent and encouraged as you learn how to start reading the Bible, this journal was made with you in mind.

I created the Cover to Cover Bible Journal—as a simple space for you to reflect, process, and pray your way through Scripture without pressure or perfection. It’s not dated, so you can pick up right where you left off—no guilt trips necessary.

The Cover to Cover Bible Journal – a gentle, grace-filled resource for women learning how to start reading the Bible at their own pace.

When Reading the Bible…Don’t Do It Alone

Text a friend and say, “Hey, want to read the Bible together this month?” You don’t need a formal plan—just someone to check in with and say, “I read this today.”
And if you don’t have someone in your circle right now, you can follow me over on Instagram @amanda.storesI’ll be walking this journey too.

You don’t have to wait for life to quiet down or for your faith to feel “just right.”

And if you’re looking for a gentle, encouraging place to start, the Word Seekers Society was created for just that. It’s a sweet monthly reminder to stay connected to God’s Word—with simple gifts that lift your spirit and help you stay anchored.
