If you’ve ever quit a Bible reading plan and felt like you failed, this post is for you. I need to be honest with you about something. I have started the Bible Recap. I have started a “Bible in a year” plan. I have opened YouVersion with the best of intentions more times than I can count. And I have quit every single one of them.
If that’s you too — if you’ve got a graveyard of half-finished reading plans somewhere in your phone or on your nightstand — I want you to know something before we go any further: It was never a “you” problem.
Why Your Bible Reading Plan Failed (It’s Not Just You)
Everyone Does the Popular Plans. That’s Kind of the Problem.
Here’s the thing about the Bible Recap, the Bible Project, and all those YouVersion plans everyone raves about — they’re popular because everyone is doing them at the same time. There’s a whole community moving through Genesis together in January, through the Psalms together in June. It’s beautiful, honestly.
But those plans don’t stop. They don’t know your life. They just keep moving forward, day 47, day 48, day 49 — whether or not you had a sick kid that week, whether or not your husband was traveling, whether or not you simply ran out of hours in the day.
And when you miss one day? Then two? Then five? You don’t just feel behind. You feel like you failed. So you close the app, tell yourself you’ll “start again next year,” and file it away with all the other times.
Struggling to Stick to a Bible Reading Plan? Here’s What’s Really Going On
I Know This Because I Lived It
I’m a mom of four. This season of my life is full — so full, and I am genuinely so blessed by it — but it also means there are days I simply cannot sit down with my Bible the way I could back when I had one baby, or before I had kids at all.
The first time I actually read the Bible cover to cover, I was in a different season. I had a six-month-old who wasn’t mobile yet, which gave me pockets of time I don’t have anymore. I checked off a reading plan app day by day, and I finished. But even then, I knew — if I’m honest — most people in a different stage of life wouldn’t have made it through. I got lucky with timing, not because I’d found something sustainable.
Before that, my Bible reading had always been in bits and pieces. Book by book, mostly New Testament. I hadn’t ever pushed myself into the Old Testament to hear the fuller story God was telling.
The Realization That Changed Everything
It took me reading through the entire Bible twice — a process that stretched out over two years — before it finally hit me:
Every single one of these reading timelines was created by a person.
Well-meaning people. People who love God and want others to know Him. But people who weren’t factoring in the stage of life you’re actually in — your kids, your marriage, your job, the very real responsibilities God Himself gave you to steward.
That’s the moment I decided: if I ever created a Bible reading resource, it would not have a start date and an end date. It would not begin January 1st and demand you finish by December 31st. It would be undated — on purpose — so it could meet you wherever you are, survive whatever season you’re in, and still be there waiting for you after a break. That decision became the Cover to Cover Bible Journal.

What Changed When the Guilt Left the Room
I can’t fully describe what it felt like the first time I journaled through Scripture without a date staring back at me. It felt like permission. Permission to seek God across my whole life instead of in one frantic, unsustainable sprint.
While every bible reading plan I tried failed me, suddenly the Bible didn’t feel like this massive, intimidating book I’d never get through. It felt like something I actually wanted in my everyday life—not because a plan was pushing me forward, but because nothing was pushing me at all.
And that’s the part I want you to hear, friend: reading directly from God’s Word — not a devotional, not someone else’s take on it, not even what your favorite pastor says about it— is what actually changes you from the inside out. Every person around you, myself included, is just a human being. God is God. His Word doesn’t need us to interpret it for you. It just needs you to open it.

If You’ve Quit Before, You’re Not Behind. You’re Just Ready for Something Different.
You don’t need more discipline. You don’t need a stricter plan or a bigger commitment. You need something built for the actual life you’re living right now. That’s what the Cover to Cover Bible Journal is for.
