if you were coming right over, you'd probably catch me dancing to elvis in the kitchen with my husband or chasing my toddler around the hallways of our house. i'm in the season of sippy cups, diaper bags, sidewalk chalk and hearing "mommy" more than any other word.
but, i guess you want to know about my journey as a surface designer and artist too. ha!
AFTER TEACHING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR 6 YEARS, I EMBARKED ON THE GREATEST JOURNEY OF BEING A MAMA.I PUT TEACHING ASIDE AND STARTED TO LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO BE IN THE STAGE OF MOTHERHOOD.I BEGAN WOOD BURNING PIECES FOR OTHERS AND THAT DEVELOPED INTO MY LOVE FOR SURFACE DESIGN PATTERNS. IT TRULY TAKES THE ART OF IN THIS SEASON OF LIFE, I KNOW EVERYTHING IS CENTERED ON PLAYING THAT ROLE WITH JOY. IN THE MIDST OF JOY, I NOTICED THIS DESIRE BUBBLING UP WITHIN ME. GETTING A MASTERS IN SCHOOL COUNSELING AND A BACHELORS IN TEACHING, YOU CAN SAY I PUT MY CREATIVITY TO REST FOR WHILE.
then i started dabbling in wood burning and color. i loved the texture of the wood and how each piece had it's own pattern. once my little one got brave enough to stand, i realized my hands could only make so much before my curious toddler came around. that's when i discovered that i can still make art by hand, in the form of surface pattern design. taking a pencil, drawing flowers, and admiring the world around me, i began to create my first surface pattern.
it was still using these hands for creativity, but also making it expand beyond one single piece of artwork. I was making a pattern that could be produced over and over, on any surface. it's funny how you start noticing patterns in the world around you, when you start making them yourself.
now, i see surface design on the pillows in my house, the dresses i put on my daughter, and the bedspread i bought for the guest room. there is no limit to how artwork can paint the objects around us.
i draw inspiration from the flowers we plant in our front yard to the beautiful bouquets of florists. atlanta, georgia suburbs give plenty of ways to get inspired. what keeps me going is the fact that everything i do, at home or in my artwork, is because of jesus. i give Him glory for the creativity i find in myself.
that is the just the beginning of learning for me, and i can't wait to hear your story.
I'm so glad you're here.
My name is amanda stores, and i have an addiction to chocolate covered banana pops and coke. i am an artist with many hats. i am torn between the world of handmade, custom, wood burnings for clients, and my love for making my artwork digital. you see, i've been wood burning (a.k.a. pyrography) for 4 year now, but i discovered this love of making patterns that can be put on fabric, clothing and home related items (like those decorative pillows on your couch right now).
everything i do, have made, and continue to make with my life is because of jesus. i wouldn't be who i am without him walking beside me, step by step. i guess you can put me in the category of a "christian creative," and i wouldn't have it any other way.
